a thoroughly good character for steadiness in this Country
has been unable to resist the greater temptations and risks
consequent on drinking in a tropical climate, and I beg to
request that this may be pointed out to the Government of
Hong Kong
I would also suggest that it should be pointed out to the Governor that his despatch is the first intimation which has reached either the Colonial Office or ourselves that Ryan, who was also sent out from this Country, had also given way to drink and finally committed suicide.

I submit the Bearer undernamed for the Hong Kong Police appointment and if you approve of him and he passes the Doctor he would be prepared to wait without retaining until 1st January, as he is in employment.

a day 19 years service, pension 1/14 character "good" and if
not promoted he would have had 4 good conduct Badges.
For four years before discharge he was acting Quarter Master Sergeant and Pay Sergeant, as to musketry, he has taken a prize at Wimbledon besides Battery prizes since discharge 17th July 1888 he has got good characters as a steward and clerk of a club. His present work is that of assistant electrician. He is a widower with no children
age 43, height 5ft 9.
